Exploring integrated approaches to health promotion and cancer prevention in the workplace

During October, the Cancer Prevention at Work project took part in the 88th edition of the National Congress of the Italian Society of Occupational Medicine (SIML), one of Italy’s leading forums for advancing knowledge and practice in occupational health.

This year’s congress focused on “From Prevention to Health Promotion: An Integrated Approach to Contexts, Regulations, Responsibilities, and Social Ethics,” opening the floor for scientific, technical, and institutional debate on how occupational medicine can address the evolving challenges of today’s world of work.

Within this context, Professor Paolo Boffetta, Principal Investigator of the Horizon Europe Cancer Prevention at Work project, delivered a presentation entitled “The Contribution of Occupational Health Surveillance to Cancer Prevention: The Cancer Prevention at Work Project” during the plenary session “The Contribution of Epidemiology to Evidence-Based Occupational Medicine.”

The CPW project aligns closely with the conference’s vision, as it pilots the integration of infection-related cancer primary prevention into occupational health surveillance (OHS) across four European countries. The workplace — a trusted yet underused setting — offers unique opportunities to bring prevention directly to workers, aligning with SIML’s commitment to innovation, safety, and well-being.

Looking Ahead

By participating in the SIML Congress, Cancer Prevention at Work continues to strengthen the link between scientific research and practical implementation in occupational health. The exchange of expertise and experiences within such a respected forum underscores the project’s dedication to building safer, healthier workplaces across Europe — where cancer prevention is not only a medical responsibility but a shared societal goal.
