The Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA), located in Oviedo, is, along with the Monte Naranco Hospital, the main hospital in the IV Health Area and a reference hospital in the Health Service of the Principality of Asturias (SESPA). It also includes the National Institute of Silicosis, a national reference unit for respiratory diseases of occupational origin.
Currently, HUCA is under the responsibility of the Health Service of the Principality of Asturias. Until June 2014, it was composed of several physically separate centers with different organizational cultures, but with unified management under one administration: on one hand, the Hospital Nuestra Señora de Covadonga – which consisted of a General Center, a Rehabilitation Center, a Maternal-Child Center, a separate External Consultation building, and a Specialty Center located outside the hospital grounds (La Lila); on the other hand, the National Institute of Silicosis and the Hospital General de Asturias.
The current headquarters of HUCA, which integrates all services into a single building while maintaining the Specialty Center “La Lila” in its original location, was inaugurated in June 2014 on the grounds of the former Cadellada Psychiatric Hospital.
